Strain Guide
Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid
Breaking Down The Basics

All strains of cannabis derive from the Cannabaceae family of plants. Some experts consider that Cannabis indica and Cannabis sativa are the two main subspecies. To create a strain, cultivators select a variety of traits to produce the effects they want. This is a similar process to how breeders create particular characteristics in dogs. People often describe cannabis strains as being Indica, Sativa, or hybrid. Hybrid refers to a strain created by combining both Indica and Sativa strains. There are more than 700 strains of cannabis on the market today. One of the most important characteristics of a cannabis strain is the THC content. Some rules exist on naming each strain, but many producers do not name their products according to these rules.
Indica

Indica strains tend to provide a physical effect, which can be felt throughout the body. These strains are commonly used for reducing pain, relieving muscle tension, increasing relaxation, and helping patients rest. Indica strains are often recommended for nighttime use because many people find them helpful for promoting sleep.
GMO Cookies, Bubba Kush, and Grandaddy Purple are all Indica strains you may have come across before. Popular Indica strains this year include Purple Punch, Ice Cream Cake, and Zkittles.
Sativa

Sativa strains tend to produce a more cerebral effect, which impacts mood and emotion. These strains are popular for increasing energy levels, improving focus, and combatting depression. Sativa strains are often recommended for daytime use because many people find them helpful for providing symptom relief without interfering with daily activities.
Jack Herer, Acapulco Gold, and Sour Diesel are well-known Sativa strains with euphoric effects. Popular Sativa strains this year include Lemon Haze, Strawberry Lemonade, and Jack The Ripper.
Hybrid

Hybrid strains are varieties that contain similar levels of Indica and Sativa. These “best of both worlds” strains offer a balance between the benefits of both types.
Blue Dream, Wedding Cake, and White Widow are well-known hybrid strains that have been bred from both Indicas and Sativas. Popular Hybrid strains this year include Gorilla Glue, Cherry Pie, and Girl Scout Cookies.
Understanding these categories helps people to better anticipate how they might respond to one product or another, but these rules aren’t set in stone either. Many people find success in treating common symptoms like pain, nausea, and appetite loss with a variety of strains from across the Indica/Sativa spectrum. We encourage you to sample a range of products, those who do so often discover preferred strains in more than one category.
